In the summery of 2010 I had a loud tapping noise in my engine compartment. I had a mechanic friend listen and he thought it was the tensioner. He was right, but it took me a dozen hours over a period of a couple months to solve the problem. Ultimately, I had to do a little back-yard engineering.

Note: I don't actually use this design myself, but putting it together helped me figure out a good method for Using PHP as a Template Engine, specifically in a Model View Controller (MVC) paradigm. My interest in the iPhone and similar mobile platforms lead me to create a simple Web App Template that works equally well for mobile and small desktop-like apps.

I had a problem with the tensioner on my 2001 Saturn SL2. It was making a very loud tapping noise. Ultimately I had to do a little back-yard engineering to solve the problem.

Clump Programming is a simple process I designed in order to organize my files more efficiently for programming.

Rational

I've been using CVS for about 10 years. This works well for me, but in some situations there is resistance to CVS either because of it's inconvenience or because of technology limitations. It's also not terribly efficient for an individual developer. As a result, I'm looking for a new process.

You can concat multiple PDf files together using Ghostscript. This will “print” each of the PDF's to a sudo printer which writes them out as a file. Because of this, the resulting PDF may be larger and could loose some text and features from the original. Works well on scanned PDF's, Faxes, and other similar documents.

After I created my new site design I decided I wanted it to fit nicely on my iPhone. When I browsed to the site, it worked okay, but I wanted more. I identified the following issues I wanted to solve.

	* The initial zoom was too small by default.
	* When I edit a page the zooming in and out is dizzying.

I'd like to keep a journal. I typically have good intentions of doing so, but I'll do it for a while and then give up because I don't have enough time. I can post tiny bits of information about my lift in a micro journal, however, and that might work for me. Much like Twitter and Facebook don't take a lot of time to write on.

I wanted to open a remove website URL instead of a local index.html file in PhoneGap. Although it's possible, and has it's uses, you shouldn't submit an app that does this to Apple for approval. They are pretty likely to reject the app and, if enough developers did so, it might give PhoneGap a bad rap at Apple. Still, the trick is useful for developers to avoiding recompiling over and over again.

CGI-LIB 2.0

CGI-LIB is a FREE ANSI C library for CGI programming. It was originally written by Noel V Aguilar. In February of 2004 I found and fixed a small bug. After contacting the original author, I decided to fix and distribute this new version. It is now distributed as Open Source under the GPL.

Several years ago a customer and I were discussing password security and he gave me a simple idea to create strong web passwords that appear to be random. I've now been using the idea successfully for years.

His idea was simply to create a formula for your password. This formula should contain elements that are easy for you to remember and should use something unique about each system it will be used on. When considering web passwords, it's pretty easy to come up with a formula.

You can use AWK to quickly look at a column of data in a CSV file.

In my case, the CSV files are in the following format:

"field1","field2","field3"

To view the 3rd field of every line, you can use the following command.

awk -F "\"*,\"*" '{print $3}' file.csv

As another example, take the following pipe delimited format:

You can use AWK to pull a specific set of lines from any text, CSV, html, or XML file. Use AWK as a substitute for CAT when you need to pull text from one specific line to another specific line.

Here's the simple AWK command that you can use.

awk '/My Start String/,/My End String/' file.txt

That simple command will output the data in file.txt starting with the text “My Start String” and ending with the text “My End String”.

I struggle with the “DIV vs Table” argument myself. Most web developers, with CSS experience, will agree that DIVs (or other styled elements) are better than tables for site layout, and I agree. Where I generally struggle, however, is when it concerns tabular data. I generally think tables are easier but in a recent project I found a darn good reason to use a DIV instead.
