2x4 Truck Bed Bicycle Rack

I built a very simple but effective bicycle rack out of a single 2×4 board.

What You'll Need

	* A 2×4 pine board ($2.50)
	* A 2“ to 3” paddle bit
	* A Hand Drill or Drill Press
	* Two 3“ C-Clamps ($10)

In the summer of 2010 I had a loud tapping noise in my engine compartment. I had a mechanic friend listen and he thought it was the tensioner. He was right, but it took me a dozen hours over a period of a couple months to solve the problem. Ultimately, I had to do a little back-yard engineering.

Base is a very simple XCode project that allows you to plug a website into XCode and release it as a native app. It is very simple and does not have any hooks into native features.

It starts with two UIWebView's (Safari Views) that make up the complete app. If you prefer a single view, simply delete the toobar view in Interface Builder. The top view is a transparent web view that covers the title bar. Then, there's the main page view. This dual view approach allows you t…

This document describes how to print booklets from letter size documents exported as PDF files. Such as those files created with the “Print to File” option.

This process works on my HP LaserJet 1000. Other printers may work differently, depending on what order the pages are in when they exit the printer. You will probably want to babysit the printer to make sure that the pages stay in the correct order, especially when you print the back sides.

Guitar

For a nice distorted guitar sound I use the PCMSynth with the Dist Guitar preset.

OC-2

One of my favorite sounds is the Boss OC-3 Guitar pedal. I don't reproduce the sound of that pedal very well but you can create a similar thick sound by adding a second PCMSynth with the Dist Guitar preset and then reduce the octave knob in the pitch section by one octave. Play the same notes as the guitar machine…

Rational

I've been using CVS for about 10 years. This works well for me, but in some situations there is resistance to CVS either because of it's inconvenience or because of technology limitations. It's also not terribly efficient for an individual developer. As a result, I'm looking for a new process.

You can concat multiple PDf files together using Ghostscript. This will “print” each of the PDF's to a sudo printer which writes them out as a file. Because of this, the resulting PDF may be larger and could loose some text and features from the original. Works well on scanned PDF's, Faxes, and other similar documents.

Test Driven Development (TDD) is all the rage these days. I personally find it difficult to write tests. I feel like no matter how much time I spend on them, my tests are never complete. I feel like not everything I want to test can be tested. I feel like I'm wasting time writing tests.

You can include HTML code in your descriptions on Amazon. I'm using this to spruce up my Kindle book descriptions. In order to do so, you need to take your HTML and encode the less than and greater than signs into HTML entities. Take the following description as an example.

I realized recently that, when I hear about new laws, it is my natural instinct to accept them. I find myself asking, “how will this law effect me?” If I don't think it effects me, I'm complacent to accept it, as is. That thinking is wrong, however, and is a big part of why our government has overgrown, at all levels, in the United States.

A quick app for writing journal entries. Defaults to just 250 characters. Twitter / Facebook like.

I'd like to keep a journal. I typically have good intentions of doing so, but I'll do it for a while and then give up because I don't have enough time. I can post tiny bits of information about my lift in a micro journal, however, and that might work for me. Much like Twitter and Facebook don't take a lot of time to write on.

Open a Remote URL in PhoneGap

I wanted to open a remove website URL instead of a local index.html file in PhoneGap. Although it's possible, and has it's uses, you shouldn't submit an app that does this to Apple for approval. They are pretty likely to reject the app and, if enough developers did so, it might give PhoneGap a bad rap at Apple. Still, the trick is useful for developers to avoiding recompiling over and over again.

Ultralight Backpacking

I've recently taken an interest in Ultralight Backpacking. I haven't actually done any backpacking yet, I'm just trying to prepare for it. My main motivation for this is the recollection of a backpacking trip when I was a young teenager. I also found that you could embed an image into your description by including an img tag. StatCounter.com runs a free service where they will do tracking for you. They can do tracking with Javascript (for your own web pages) or with an image. You can use AWK to quickly look at a column of data in a CSV file.

In my case, the CSV files are in the following format:
"field1","field2","field3"
To view the 3rd field of every line, you can use the following command.
awk -F "\"*,\"*" '{print $3}' file.csv

I struggle with the “DIV vs Table” argument myself. Most web developers, with CSS experience, will agree that DIVs (or other styled elements) are better than tables for site layout, and I agree. Where I generally struggle, however, is when it concerns tabular data. I generally think tables are easier but in a recent project I found a darn good reason to use a DIV instead.
