Making a Nozzle Drill

Option #1 - Rolled Paper

My first few hand drills were made with wood, but I recently made a new drill by simply wrapping paper around my drill bit until it was the desired thickness, then gluing it all together. I got better results with this method than with the drilling.

  1. Cut a strip of paper the length you want for the handle
  2. Roll it around the drill bit and glue the first 1/4“ or so
  3. Continue rolling to desired diameter
  4. Glue the last 1/4”

Option #2 - Drilling a Dowel

The following instructions should create a perfectly centered and perfectly strait hole in the center of a 1/4“ dowel. The drilled dowel becomes the handle for the nozzle drill.

  1. Use a scrap piece of wood. I used a 2×6.
  2. On a drill-press, secure the scrap piece.
  3. Drill a 1/4” hole into the scrap wood. Leave it secured.
  4. Replace the 1/4“ bit with the smaller bit.
  5. Place the 1/4” dowel into the 1/4“ hole.
  6. Drill into the dowel.

Now you have perfect drill handle. Take out your smaller bit and glue it into the handle.
