I Bought the Late 2016 MacBook Pro with Touchbar and Love It

I've owned the late 2016 MacBook pro for a few weeks and I'm really enjoying it. There's been a lot of hate for the MacBook and it's touchbar, so I wanted to write my views on the matter.

I'm a developer.

The Mac does get worse battery performance. In fact, over the first 4 or 5 days it was downright unbearable. The computer was new, however, and I was syncing 200G of data from Dropbox and installing software as I worked through getting the machine tweaked the way I like it.

The touchbar turned out to be awesome when I needed to help my 15 year old daughter do a school work assignment. We had to make a short movie for her Spanish class. I fired up Quicktime, which puts a big red “Record” button on the touchbar. As soon as she was ready to start speaking, either one of us could reach over and touch that button without much thought.

If the MacBook came with a USB-C to Micro USB cable, it would have solved the majority of “dongle” issues for me.

At my desk, I use the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. This adapter stays on my desk connected to a USB hub and my monitor. That means a single USB-C connection ties me into my second monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

It still has a headphone port.

I can charge my Google Pixel with the same charger I use on the laptop or with a USB-C cable from the laptop to the phone. If I had an iPhone I would simply purchase the USB-C to Lightning charge cable and forget about dongle gate. Again, the same charger works for both the Mac and the phone.
