Intel 82801G Under Debian Etch

After installing Debian Etch on my PC, I was unable to hear any sound. I found a thread on the issue at http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1488. I followed the directions of the user who said he solved the problem by compiling alsa-source. Here are my step-by-step instructions.

1. Switch to root, install module-assistant and alsa-source, and then start module-assistant.

sudo su
apt-get install module-assistant alsa-source
module-assistant

2. In module-assistant, select the PREPARE option.

3. Choose the SELECT option.

4. Check the Alsa box then select OK.

5. Choose the BUILD option.

6. When prompted, select Yes to download and Yes to install.

7. Quit module-assistant.

At this point, your sound should work, although you may need to restart any sound utilities. It may be a good idea to reboot here.

After one kernel update, my sound card kinda went nuts. It basically repeats the sounds it should play over and over again, causing noise. It seems like the sounds are repeating on multiple channels as well. Repeating the process above solved that problem as well.
