Goals X3

Goals X3 (pronounced “goals by three”) is a way to break down a goal and make it attainable. The idea is simple. First, set a goal and include a time frame for reaching that goal. Next, break that goal down into 3 small things that you can do to reach your goal. Make sure each of these 3 things is small and easy enough that you will actually accomplish the goal. The easier, the better. If you make your items difficult, it will be more difficult to attain your goal.

An Example

Originally, I set a goal to weigh 200 pounds by Christmas 2009. I needed to loose 40 pounds in one year. I broke the goal down into 3 simple things I could do to reach that goal.

  1. I will only drink 24 ounces per day, other than water.
  2. I will walk on the treadmill 10 minutes per day.
  3. I will eat less than 2400 calories daily.

I started working on this goal on November 17th, 2008. At that time I weight 241 lbs. By March 22, 2009 I was down to 229 lbs. At that point, I started to be sick a lot, which I thought might be related to my calorie intake, so I ditched the goal.

Now, it's November 16th, 2009 and I'm back up to 246 pounds (still 20 pounds lower than my highest weight, but obviously back to where I was in March 2009). So, It's November 16th and I'm setting a new Goal. My new goal is to lose a few pounds by December 15th and start myself back on a downward trend.

  1. I will limit myself to 24 ounces of pop, per day.
  2. I will walk on the treadmill 15 minutes, 3 times per week.
  3. I will avoid all deep fried foods.

That's it. 3 simple things I can do to reach my new goal.
